A Joyous Start to 2026: Heritage Celebrations and Winter Outings at our Retirement Community

January has begun on a very lovely note at Jagriti Dham. Winter is here, and Kolkata is full of new vivacity; we have been partying for reasons galore. We have filled our calendar with mindful and social events just for our residents. Retirement living should be more than peaceful – it should be engaging, cultured and joyous.

For this month, we were lucky to experience three wonderful events: the uplifting Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, the blessed Makar Sankranti, and a dazzling riverside picnic. Each event brought its own unique flavour to our campus, highlighting the multifaceted approach to holistic living we champion here. These celebrations are far more than mere dates on a calendar; they are vital opportunities for our senior citizens to connect with their heritage, bond with fellow residents, and embrace the vitality of life.

Makar Sankranti

Below, we recount the first half of our joyous January.

Honouring a Visionary: Swami Vivekananda Jayanti

We commenced our festive fortnight by paying homage to one of India’s greatest spiritual leaders, Swami Vivekananda, on his birth anniversary. At Jagriti Dham, a retirement community, we interpret this day as a celebration of youthful spirit and spiritual strength—qualities that remain ageless.

Sunrise Morning Meet Day started with a calming morning meet. Swamiji’s picture was kept at the centre of the altar and decorated beautifully with garlands of white tuberoses and yellow marigolds. Residents offered fresh flowers to the altar, praying to Swamiji.

A little “speech” by one of our residents took everyone by surprise (in a good way!). She went on to quote Swamiji, “Arise, awake, and stop not until the goal is reached”. She narrated this beautiful incident where Swamiji greeted a foreigner in his native tongue out of sheer respect just to make him feel comfortable. She concluded with another quotable from Swamiji ji, “If you respect others, you earn respect in return.” And of course, what better way to celebrate than by giving out copies of Yoga to all our residents to keep them fit and fine.

Harvest Cheer:

Celebrating Makar Sankranti

The spirit of praying and giving shanti to Swamiji was quickly replaced by festival celebrations of Makar Sankranti. It is one of the oldest festivals celebrated by Hindus that signifies the end of winter and longer days. Residents celebrated Makar Sankranti with Jagriti Dham from sunrise to sunset.

The day commenced with a devout Morning Prayer and Puja, creating a serene atmosphere for our residents to embrace their spiritual awakening. Draped in cosy shawls to keep the winter chill at bay, they offered fresh flowers and Gangajal (holy water) to the altar with deep reverence. The ceremony concluded with a heartwarming gesture, as boxes of piping hot Pithe and Mithais were lovingly distributed to each resident’s doorstep.

Afternoon Creativity and Evening Warmth As the day warmed up, we hosted an art session. It was a delight to see residents carefully filling in intricate flower-shaped designs. The celebration concluded with Agni Puja and a magical evening bonfire on the lawn. Residents sat in a large circle, the glow of the fire illuminating their faces as they soaked in the warmth and companionship.

The Grand Winter Outing: Riverside Picnic

To cap off our festive week, we organised a special excursion away from the campus—a grand picnic by the riverside. In the realm of active senior communities in India, such outings are essential for a refreshing change of scenery.

The destination was a picturesque riverside retreat featuring charming cottages with traditional red-and-white artwork. The sight of the calm waters and the gentle winter sunset set the mood for a perfect day out.

Enjoying the fresh breeze from the river while drifting along was a dream for residents. Assisted by our lovely team members, residents paddled across the water in a country boat. They smiled from ear to ear as they soaked up the beautiful sights of the horizon.

Fun on the Grass Back on dry land, everyone relaxed and took part in some old-fashioned leisure. Some residents played on the swings, soaking up the warm sun. Others grabbed a book and a seat on one of the benches. Friends congregated underneath a few red umbrellas, laughing and competing over games of Ludo.

More than Just a Care Home

At Jagriti Dham, a retirement community, we often emphasise that we are far more than traditional care homes for seniors or a stereotypical old age home. We are a vibrant ecosystem designed for the modern elder.

Events such as Vivekananda Jayanti, Makar Sankranti & our massive picnics play a big role in keeping life here enriched. They help us ensure that our residents aren’t just ‘taken care of’ – they LIVE, here. They feel. They celebrate. We believe that blending traditions with playful leisure is one of the ways we can serve residents and families who desire a premium living experience in Kolkata.
