Diwali, the festival of lights, is about so much more than illumination. It’s a sensory celebration of joy, togetherness, and spiritual renewal. The warm glow of diyas, the fragrance of marigolds and incense, the sound of ancient bhajans, the taste of festive sweets. At Jagriti Dham, Diwali is a chance to transcend tradition to touch hearts with an authentic expression of what lies at the core of our philosophy: compassionate care, community, and joyous living.
This year, the entire campus of Jagriti Dham came alive with an otherworldly glow, not only from the lights, but from the beaming faces of our residents. As the sun went down, the entire facade of Jagriti Dham was aglow, with cascading lights and rows of earthen diyas adorning walkways, welcoming Goddess Laxmi to our campus. The entrance lobby, an architectural space designed to bring inner peace to our residents, became a canvas of colour. An intricate flower rangoli floated in a traditional urli, with the candlelit reflection dancing on the gleaming floors. It was more than decoration; it was the creation of a truly serene residential haven for our community.

Our main event commenced with a traditional Laxmi Ganesh Puja. The pandit performed the prayers in our peaceful prayer hall, with residents sitting together, as an essential part of the puja. The joy on the residents’ faces as they participated in the aarti and received the prasad was truly heartwarming. Traditions like these are important and much loved by senior citizens, and for us, at Jagriti Dham, these are memories we celebrate together with our residents. The staff were on hand to help every resident who wished to take part. A care team member was sitting with a resident, offering her a tray of diyas to light.
How can one think of Diwali without a little sparkle? The celebrations continued after the sun went down when we moved outdoors. That is the Jagriti Dham difference. We know safety is critical, but we also know that joy has no age limit.
Our staff and caregivers (who were all trained in advance) became “joy-assistants” for the evening. Standing right next to residents, they carefully assisted them in lighting sparklers and phuljharis. It was so heartwarming to see residents, with a safe and steady hand by their side, making patterns in the night air, with joy and wonder on their faces like children. This is how world-class elderly care is delivered. It’s about more than just being supported; it’s about being enabled to do new things and make happy memories in a safe environment.

Diwali at Jagriti Dham was an evening of heartwarming social bonding. We exchanged gifts, but the real gift was each other’s company. Sharing jokes and stories and watching the sky lanterns go up into the night with our wishes in them was priceless. These get-togethers form an important part of the residents’ lives at Jagriti Dham. They help keep loneliness at bay, which is often a major misconception about conventional old age homes.
Old age home, as a phrase, conjures up an image of a quiet, sedentary, and lonely life. At Jagriti Dham, we try to dispel those notions. We are active, vibrant, and a happy community. It is more than a senior citizens home, it’s a parivaar – a family. Q. What are some of the best gift options for senior citizens on the occasion of Diwali?
Choosing the right Diwali gift for seniors means prioritising their comfort, health, and emotional well-being. While traditional sweets are common, a more thoughtful and health-conscious option is a beautifully curated box of dry fruits, which is both festive and nutritious. Other excellent gifts include comfortable items like soft shawls or stoles, easy-to-use audio players (like a Saregama Carvaan) pre-filled with classic songs, or even a digital photo frame with family pictures.
Q. How can one deal with loneliness during festivals like Diwali?
Loneliness is common for most during the festive season. The first and foremost approach towards this is by creating and maintaining a feeling of community. Participate more in group activities, even small ones. We at the luxurious old age home in Kolkata, Jagriti Dham, make sure that our residents’ calendar is full of events and activities so that they remain busy. Video calls and phone calls with family and friends, and sharing of festive moments, can also keep one connected. Try and be an active participant instead of being a passive spectator.
