Akshaya Tritiya: The Eternal Dawn of Divine Grace

Akshaya Tritiya, or “the Eternal Day of Lord Shiva”, is considered one of the most important and beneficial days in terms of establishing a direct experience of the Divine. According to the Vedic tradition, there are certain windows or sacred timeframes wherein the boundary between our material world and the Divine universe is particularly thin – and as we enter this period, the Universe has created an abundance of energy which provides us with an opportunity to align our individual souls with an eternal source.

The Akshaya Tritiya festival takes place on the third (tritiya) lunar day of the “bright half” (shukla paksha) of the Hindu calendar month of Vaisakha. In the spiritual centre of India, this day is not just a great day to celebrate, but also a sacred holiday during which we receive an outpouring of divine grace from the entire universe. The Sun, representing the soul, and the Moon, representing the mind, are at their highest point in the sky on this date and provide us with their most concentrated energies, which make it possible to start new journeys and focus on establishing powerful spiritual practices and engaging in giving selflessly to others.

An educational infographic explaining the etymology of Akshaya Tritiya. It defines "Akshaya" as eternal or never-ending and "Tritiya" as the third lunar day of the Vaisakha month. The graphic features golden symbols of everlasting prosperity, a cornucopia of wealth, and traditional peacocks.

Etymology: The Meaning of Akshaya Tritiya

The profound significance of this day is locked within its very name:

  • A-Kshaya: In Sanskrit, ‘A’ means not, and ‘Kshaya’ means diminish, decay, or erode. Together, it means “that which never diminishes” or “the eternal.”
  • Tritiya: Refers to the third lunar phase.

The Akshaya Tritiya festival is a day that reminds us of our spirit, known as Atma, which is eternal and forever untouched by the material world.

First Mention of Akshaya Tritiya in Sacred Texts

Our ancestors recognised the power of this day thousands of years ago.

The Spiritual Significance of Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya is not an astrological event and does not require an astrologer to determine a specific muhurta (time of day) for auspiciousness. Rather, it is a Swayam Siddha Muhurta (self-originated, or inherently auspicious) from sunrise to sunset. Although many people today associate Akshaya Tritiya with the purchase of gold, ancient texts indicate that the true wealth accumulated on Akshaya Tritiya is counted as Punya (spiritual merit). Therefore, any Dana (charity), Japa (holy name chant), Yajna (sacrifice) or Tapa (austerity) undertaken during this auspicious day will provide inexhaustible and imperishable benefits throughout the soul’s existence.

The Divine Leelas: Stories of Akshaya Tritiya

The vastness of Akshaya Tritiya is magnified by the limitless divine events (Leelas) that have historically occurred on this blessed day:

  • Birth of Lord Parashurama: The sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, Parashurama, descended to earth on this day to reinstate Dharma and purify the earth by eliminating tyrannical kings.
  • Descent of Mother Ganga: Responding to the relentless penance of King Bhagiratha, the holy river Ganges descended to the earth on this day, bestowing salvation to his ancestors and endless purification to humanity.
  • Dawn of Treta-yuga: The cycle of time changed this day to mark the beginning of Treta Yuga, the second great cycle of time in the universe.
  • Sudama’s Visit to Dwaraka: Sudama had nothing but a small handful of beaten rice (poha) to offer to his childhood friend, Lord Krishna. Because Sudama was devoted to Lord Krishna, he was rewarded with unlimited wealth (akshaya).
  • The Gift of the Akshaya Patra: The Pandavas were in exile and prayed to Surya, the god of the sun, and received the Akshaya Patra as a blessing, a miraculous container that continued to fill until Draupadi had eaten her last bite.
  • Composing the Mahabharata: The great sage Vyasadeva chose this absolutely auspicious day to begin dictating the glorious epic, the Mahabharata, to Lord Ganesha.
  • The Shower of Gold (Kanakadhara Stotram): It is said that when an impoverished woman presented a single amla fruit (Indian gooseberry) from her meagre harvest to the young renunciant Adi Shankaracharya, her acts of devotion inspired him to create the Kanakadhara Stotram on this day. As a result of this devotional creation, Goddess Lakshmi brought forth a rainstorm of golden amlas to the woman’s home.
  • Lord Kubera’s Blessing: Satisfied by his powerful austerities, Lord Shiva chose Kubera as the heavenly treasurer and custodian of the universe’s wealth on this day.
  • Appearance of Goddess Annapoorna: It is said that the Goddess of nutrition, Annapoorna Devi, manifested on this day (as a form of Goddess Parvati) to ensure that no being in the universe will ever go hungry.

Celebrations of Akshaya Tritiya Across India

From the snowcapped mountains of the Himalayas to the warm beaches and oceans of southern India, the celebration of Akshaya Tritiya is done with great devotion and through widespread regional cultural customs.

  • Simhachalam, Andhra Pradesh: Inside the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha temple, the Deity is anointed with a thick application of scented sandalwood paste throughout the entire year.  The unique aspect of Akshaya Tritiya is that the sandalwood paste is removed from the Deity so that devotees can receive the very rare Nijarupa Darshanam from the Lord in his true, unadulterated form.
  • Jagannath Puri, Odisha: The festival of Chandan Yatra (sandalwood festival) begins on this day to honour Lord Jagannath.  Also, on this festive day, the preparation begins for the making of the majestic wooden chariots for the world-famous Ratha Yatra.
  • Remuna, Odisha (Kshira-chora Gopinatha): On this auspicious day, Lord Gopinatha receives special worship. He loves his greatest devotee, Madhavendra Puri, so much that he “stole” a pot of sweet, condensed milk (Kshira) as an expression of that love.
  • Badrinath, Uttarakhand: In the majestic snowcapped Himalayas, the Kapat (sacred doors) of the temple open to allow devotees into the temple for the first time after the long, cold winter; this day signifies the official commencement of the pilgrimage season.

  • Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu: The temple town witnesses a remarkable divine sight as 12 Garuda Sevas are organised simultaneously. Deities from various Vishnu temples are carried in a grand march upon their divine mount, Garuda.
  • Hal Khata, West Bengal: Business owners initiate new account books (Hal Khata). They clean their shops, offer prayers to Lord Ganesha for auspicious beginnings and Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity, and distribute sweets.
  • Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh: At the Banke Bihari temple, this is the only day in the year when devotees are allowed to have Charan Darsham (the highest blessing that can be given) to see the divine lotus feet of the deity.
  • Maharashtra: Married women celebrate by holding Haldi-Kumkum ceremonies. They invite each other over to their homes, put turmeric and kumkum on one another, and give each other gifts and sprouted grains, while praying for their husbands to live long and for peace in their homes.

Akshaya Tritiya in Jainism: The Supreme Fast

In Jainism, Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated with reverence as Varshi Tap Parana. This day is also as the first Tirthankar, Lord Rishabhadeva (Adinath), broke his year-long penance by accepting Ikshu Rasa (Sugar Cane Juice) from King Shreyansha. Today, the Jain devotees who have performed the arduous Varshi Tap (fasting every alternate day for one year) celebrate their triumph of spirit over body by consuming Ikshu Rasa (Sugar Cane Juice).

While gold can be traded by numerous people, the acts of generosity that we perform, the prayers we say, and the kindness we show on this day can be called Akshaya; they are immortalised in the journey of our soul.

May the divine energies of this sacred day awaken the inexhaustible spring of peace, prosperity, and pure devotion within you.
